Where are the new poker sites? Where is the buzz?

I've been wondering this over the last couple of months and I am amazed that a game that was looking like it was going to take over the world has gone flat all because Americans cannot (legally) play any more. Not strictly true as one or two sites such as PokerStars are supporting these poor unfortunates but it seems that with one stroke of the pen the amendment in the Safe Port Act is knocking the stuffing out of this wonderful game. Or is it?

Although there has been a levelling off of new poker sites (understandably) the ones left standing will be able to provide you with a enough traffic for you to find a game at any time of the day or night.

Also the live poker scene is still on the increase and our local card room (Hanley Circus) is trying to implement good value freezeouts as well as bounty tourney's, and very soon Dusk Til Dawn will soon be opening and will be the premier poker club utside of London if it all goes to plan. Getting a phone call from Simon Trumper was a nice touch.

The guys at Betfair deserve congratulations too for being the first to organise a tournament in Singapore, as another example of the established poker clients trying to find new markets.

On a personal note, I'd like to congratulate my very good friends Paul and Pernille who got married about 10 days ago, and also to Sam who accepted PaulM's proposal of marriage on the same day. My first time in another country and one of the best times of my life.

Wonderful.
<BlogItemURL>

Unfortunately stuff got in the way of keeping it updated. I'm not doing that again!

2007 will be the same as any other, but I can be cautiously optimistic after several years that it will be a good one. I am fortunate to be forum buddies with quite a few who will achieve this dream this year. Good luck to them, I truly hope they have a fantastic time, and get a star at their table if nothing else.

However 2 of my PuntersLounge friends have had their dream shattered.

With just over a week to go to the start of the Main Event tournament they have been informed by Goal Poker that they will not be fulfilling there obligation to these players and they will not be sending them to the WSoP, despite both winning their seats.... This is approximately 10 days after the same poker site sent a plane load of poker players (of which I should have been one) to Ibiza to watch the World Cup final on a private beach, with huge screen and topless models a-plenty.

Disgraceful behaviour. There were 2047 runners, and at the start I didn't hold much hope of doing anything. This changed with 2 hands, my AA vs KK, and a multi-handed all in that I came out on top of.

This massive increase in my stack allowed me to play my normal game, and to lose the odd confrontation against shorter stacks, but all in all I generally stayed top 100 for most of the evening.

Its been a long time since I've done so well in such a large field, so I should be pleased, however a couple of things annoyed me.

One was when a much larger stack arrived at my table, and tried to use his chips as a lever. I got annoyed on more than one occasion when I went into the hand ahead pre-flop, and got outdrawn. I was so happy to have got the better of him that I couldn't help sharing my joy with PL, only to discover that the 'villain' was not only a member, but was reading what I'd written.

I believed he'd only joined that night, and so embarassed myself even further by thanking him for calling my all in QQ vs 99 which set me well on the way to a top 50 finish. Stupid, petty, and anything but 'valiant'.

Part of the problem was that there were a lot of 'bad' players getting lucky, and it was a constant battle against your inner demons, who are asking you, "Why are you putting up with this shit?". I was struggling against tilt almost all evening, and this showed when other tables for other tournies popped up. as I had no patience and went out pretty quickly.

I managed to beat the tilt by getting and winning a couple of good hands, and was sitting top 10 when the bubble came and went.

This is when things started to go wrong for me, or work against me. After the fourth break, and 4 hours of play, I was 11th, but only had about 1/3rd of the chips of the chip leader. I needed to steadily build my stack at this point, but unfortunately the cards dried up, and when I had half decent cards, I was being asked to commit a sizable portion of my stack in calling an all in, which I decided against. So for most of the 5th hour of play I had few opportunites to increase my position. So I was starting to get anxious, and then I got moved, for the firt time. I was placed with the cheap leader and about half of the bigger stacks, and the good cards were all going elsewhere.

So I have about 11 blinds left and get dealt pocket 4's in 3rd position. I hoped to make a steal, and raised 3xBB (36,ooo chips). All folded round to the BB (a player I perceived to be LAG), who called. When he checked, I assumed he had Ace rag, and the flop wasn't scary enough for me to fold, and I was scared of losing the intiative, so I shoved, hoping for the fold. He paused and called. In the split second before I saw his cards I thought, oh well I'm behind, maybe I'll catch a 4... then I saw he had trip 7's and my tourney was over.

Silly really that I beat 2,020 players, put the best score on the board for the forum, yet still fell as though I let everyone down. Ah well, tonights another tourney.

On the STT front at Pokerstars, I have broken the $100 barrier (from $4), and when I break $150 I plan to step up to the next buy in, as $500 will take a long long time.
<BlogItemURL>

I was completely card dead after I fluked an A vs 99, and had I not I'd have probably been first out.

Well slowly but surely I was falling behind, and the first half decent hand I had I was pushing. It turned out to be K 10 os, and I walked into pocket 4's (no really). I didn't improve, and had less than 1 BB left, with the blinds approaching.

Anyway on my BB, after ante's I had 130 chips left. Now I would have liked to have seen the flop, but Dave488 raised me. Now conventional thinking is I should push, but I had 83os and I was really pissed off that I'd been given that cack hand (where was my heroic 72os?), so I thought, for comedy value, I'd fold.

I was crying with laughter, and the whole table was (I think) stunned. I didn't win or anything like that, but survived another round, by getting 66 and beating 44 (of all hands), then the very next hand I had AA!! lmao!!

<span style="color: On Friday I had a long trip, and when I got back I was looking forward to playing a bit of poker, so I regged for The Mansion Triple Chance World Cup tourney.

Its a gimmicky MTT, with extra prizes depending on finishing position, and bounties. I was ticking along, until this happened.

Quote:

         DEALER: Your hole cards are 6 heart 5club
DEALER: Ace and King, it's your turn
DEALER: The flop is 2diamond 3heart 2heart
DEALER: Valiant23pl, it's your turn (Here I click all in! )
Riffmish: sorry
Valiant23pl: oh shit
DEALER: Riffmish, it's your turn
DEALER: The turn is 6spade
Valiant23pl: wrong button
DEALER: The  river is 6diamond
DEALER: Riffmish shows Aclub 2club
DEALER: Sherman shows Jheart 8heart
DEALER: Valiant23pl shows 6heart 5club
DEALER: Valiant23pl wins 2,784 with a full house, sixes full of deuces
Valiant23pl: I swear
DEALER: Valiant23pl wins 22,660 with a full house, sixes full of deuces
philossify: nice catch  MrV
............................
Riffmish: expletive
Valiant23pl: Riff I'm sorry
philossify: no yer not  :-)
Valiant23pl: well  okay
Valiant23pl: but it WAS a mistake

That put me 2nd in chips, after I was in serious danger of going out in 20 something. The good that came out of this was how sporting the other guy was about it. I think he was so amazed that I had absolutely nothing after the flop, yet hit runner runner to decimate him. I was delighted obviously when I had won, but felt terribly gulty I had inflicted the mother of bad beats.

Although not much for me has happened in MTT's, in STT's on Pokerstars I've had a fantastic amount of success. I deposited $25 then proceeded to lose almost all of it (I was down to my last buy-in!). From that last buy-in ($3+40) I've managed to get my balance on their up to $80.80, just by playing the $3 tables.

I may not step up until I have $500, which is a long way off, but think I need to make gradual step ups, rather than rushing and risking.
<BlogItemURL>

So I feel I owe you an explanation.

I am not a good loser.
:-)

I should be, as I've plenty of practice, but as you know from my blog poker is my replacement for football, a sport where I was terribly competitive and driven.

During the 90 minutes of play I was totally focused on my team winning, to the point where I detested every single player on the opposition, until the final whistle, and I'd change back into the good-natured 'nice' person that I think I am normally.

The problem that I have when I play poker, is there is no final whistle. I need to find a way to swtitch off the 'nasty' competitive me in the same way I could when footballing. I should realise that you make your decisions with your cards and your stacks, and I have no right to expect you to play by 'my rules' (in other words, let me win).

When I go out of a tourney though, the last thing I want to say is "nice hand" or "well played" or "good game", regardless of the person who beats me. The game is not finished, so how can my nice side materialise... So when you knocked me out of the PL Virgin tourney last week, for 5 minutes after the river on my last hand, I couldn't accept that I was not playing, and so the nasty side of me made that embaressing post. In fact the reason it has not been deleted is to shame myself, and to remember that when you get the message saying 'you finished in xxth position' that is my 'final whistle'.

Maybe then I can post what I really want to say, instead of looking like an immature fool.

What I really wanted to say was, 'you lucky person, you. You'd better go on and win it'. Maybe next time I can...

Anyway you deserve credit, as you've been playing well and getting some good results! Well done.

Please accept my apology, mate.

P.S. I notice in your blog that all the articles are in a different coloured text, and I wondered why mine wasn't. Well... tonight I found the text colour button.
<BlogItemURL>

Unfortunately, because of the lack of players one of those wins can only be loosely described as an MTT, with 18 runners.

The only fly in the ointment was yesterday playing in a short-handed rebuy. I survived the rebuy period without adding to my original buy-in, and started the final table in 2nd place. With 3 paid I proceeded to throw my chips away in a terrible manner, and busted out in 5th.

Pride before a fall, I suppose, but I still have more confidence in my play on Mansion than on Boss Media. It is something I MUST address if I hope to grow as a player.
<BlogItemURL>

The ability to confidently make the right decision should be one which is learnt and should stay inside you, but I'm finding that mental scars run deeper than I realise, as I can be in two identical situations on two different sites, and the fact remains that one site I play correctly, and on the other I play incorrectly, or badly, purely because I know that I have been 'hurt' by a site (or in this case a network) far too often, and badly.

I suppose the solution would be to walk away from the network until the wounds have healed, but that almost seems like admitting defeat, which I'm not prepared to do.
<BlogItemURL>

Fortunately, our decision to err on the side of caution for arriving was proved to be a good one, as when we arrived we were told that things were being brought forward by an hour.

The Golf Bunker was the comapct, but sufficient venue, and the bar looked well stocked. After grabbing a couple of beers then back outside for a smoke I felt no nerves, but almost wished I did, as maybe that had a part to play in my own downfall.

Pocket Lady's bad luck continued in these events and she was out first, although I wasn't far behind her, due to bad luck coupled with bad play.

The very first hand I was dealt pocket 10's, and really I should have folded them, but I made a small raise, expecting all to fold due to over caution. They did, except the big blind. The flop brought two 5's, and no overcards, so I was pretty confident I was ahead, and played accordingly. Turn and river and there were no straight or flush possibilities AND no overcards, so apart from the outside possibility of the BB holding a 5 I was ahead with 10's and 5's, 9 kicker. I lost half my stack when he turned over K5os. The second and last hand was on my BB when I got Q9 diamonds. The flop gave me top pair with a good kicker, but i checked it (another bad play?), as did the table to my nemesis, who put a raise of 10xBB. This to me looked like a position steal, so I came over the top and went all in, which he called and turned over K9os. No improvement for either and I was out.

So I spent the rest of the evening getting to know people, eating the fabulous food, drinking, and supporting my fellow PLers.

The final table was populated by 6 out of the 10 from PL, and there supporters provided an almost WPT final table atmosphere, with plenty of cheering whenever 'we' one a hand or pot. Although we didn't see one of our own winning the 1st prize, we took 4 out of the 6 on offer, with Penelopeys coming 3rd and BigAndy coming 2nd (after claiming his first MTT win the night before - well done mate).

A bit more drinking and joking went on into the early hours. All in all a profitable and enjoyable evening.

A Missed Opportunity

Sunday saw me on Mansion playing the PokerDome qualifiers, where the first and only prize was a seat at a live televised tournament in Vegas (worth $7,000!). I had a great tournament, and all the way through I was at or very near the top and was playing as well as I had done in ages. The fact that I made 2 mistakes that eventually cost me the tournament doesn't bother me too much, as eventually I lost when my AQos lost to AJ on the river.

Considering the time, the support I received from PL members was truly astounding, and if any read this, thank you so much.
<BlogItemURL>

Was really looking forward to it until Thursday afternoon (just as we were about to leave), when something occurred to me. PL legend and forum head had let me know that I was organising the poker tournament!!!

Okay. No problem. I've played live maybe a handful of times, but always with dealers provided, but I've played many many MTT's so a 3 table 30 seater tourney should be a doddle, until you realise that you have to be on top of everything, including string bets, mis-deals, blind structure, pay out, how to deal a flop properly, multiple side pots, chip distribution and management, organising who is placed where at the start and then being aware of the people going out in order to keep the tables balanced. Oh, and play well enough to survive myself.

When you consider the 'whole' it is understandably daunting, but my approach was to take each task as it came. For example I was still deciding on my blind structure whilst playing the tournament.

It was played in the right spirit, whilst at the same time maintaining the competitive element of any PL poker tourney. All in all it was the most enjoyable tourney I've ever played in, purely because of the people who made the effort to turn up and play.

Thank you all!

The top 5 were;
1st - Aliando (£100)* 1st/2nd prize split
2nd - Morlspin (£100)
3rd - Ronay (£50)
4th - Gripper (£30)
5th - Me (£20)

The tournament, however was just the start of things, with us playing sit n goes through the night, right up to when the resteraunt opened for breakfast.

Read about the whole weekend (including a Slovakian turning up thinking he had a job in the U.K.) here
<BlogItemURL>

I don't remember dishing out bad beats or sucking out on the river or anything like that, but I lost most of my chips to Cadzow (laidbackbloke) when I walked into his AA on the big blind, which left me with less than a BB. Dealt 89os* UTG, I decided to jump. All folded to the SB (JulioArca) who called, and that was when it started.

The BB (akw144) before checking it and the flop hitting said, "Check it down?", to which JA replied okay. So they checked it down, and the BB hit a straight on the river, beating my two pair. What annoyed me was that up until the river the BB was way behind to the SB's Ace-rag, and my two pair. IF the SB had played there was a possibility that he could have got the BB off the pot, which I could have then won.

I have complained to the support at Virgin, in other words Boss Media - who are truly awful. I have been told that the matter has been dealt with, but not been told the outcome.

I am going to ring them now to see where I stand.
<BlogItemURL>

I think the problem is that I want to learn to be more aggressive, and less predictable, but my timing is absolutely lousy.

I think that I have to forget all about Gaf?'s thoughts and the championing of Harrington, and concentrate on my natural style. Too often recently I have played like a complete doofus.

In the PL league game on Monday I sucked out on Avongirl's trip Q's (slow-played? or cautious?) by chasing a 4 spade flush to the river, and then literally gave my chips away when I re-raised Runadrum (UTG min. raise) 50% of my stack with JJ (hoping he'd fold), but in truth I knew he had A10 or better, so WHY throw your chips in when there's an A on the flop???? Honestly I think it was for two reasons... (1)Frustration at being hurt by the flop yet again, and (2) Annoyance that Runadrum didn't fold (why should he?). I threw my chips away like a baby does with its rattle, and got what I deserved.

Then last night I did the same thing in 2 situations. 1 - Chased a straight to the river and sulked when my straight missed and filled Aodn (McGin). I tried to tighten up and got nothing, started to get nervous/frustrated, so I tried a Harrington some time later (2) Dealt 77 in 3rd/4th position, I had 2 choices, fold em and wait (possibly getting whittled down to nothing) which Gaf says is bad although it has served me well in the past, OR push (a la Harrington?) whilst I had folding equity, and try and pick up the blinds. Well, I pushed, Aodn called with AQs and won the race, and I'm out.

I really want to be sporting and wish people luck, but I am so annoyed with my own game right now.
<BlogItemURL>

There was some animosity towards the Laddies forum, who in the first game accised us of taking it easy against each other, which quite frankly was laughable, if not so insulting. In this game they were quite open about 'soft-playing' against team-mates. Something no PLer (or any other forum involved, as far as I could tell) would ever do. I ended up bubbling when my JJ (big pre-flop raise) was called by the BB holding 87 - he hit an 8 on the flop (no higher cards) and put me all in, then hit a 7 on the turn...

Tuesday See above - my birthday etc.. Ended the day in the A+E Unit with youngest with a suspected broken finger. On the tables it was a quieter day.

Wednesday Was the Sp.odds/PL MTT league game, which was completely spoiled for me by a player called Dirty Mom, who registered by accident, then spent almost every hand going all in as a massive underdog, and then outdrawing far better hands. I could have coped I think, if I'd had some break from it, but it (dirty mom) was on my table almost all evening.

Thursday Was the day of Virgins Bloggers freeroll, and with only 72 runners with the winner going to Vegas to play in the WSoP it represented all entrants best chance of getting there. I went out when I suffered a bad beat when my KK got cracked by QQ, which hit a four card flush on the board. Truly sickening, although the guy that 'did' that to me, MoFace ended up winning, so PuntersLounge is guaranteed TWO players at the WSoP!!!

Well done Mo. You can read about his views on cheese and floobs by clicking on the link on the right, which if not there now will appear shortly.

I'm not a massive fan of playing STT's at the weekend, but I'm doing so at the moment partly out of boredom.
<BlogItemURL>

The first opportunity is through a Bloggers Freeroll, which would make for a fantastic birthday present.

The next opportunity is a lot harder, as thats playing a series of tournaments provided by Virgin exclusively for members of The PuntersLounge where there is a lot of fine poker players, and even though I was going through my own purple patch, I'm in a bit of an MTT slump at the moment, despite my very good performance in the Betfair Grand Prix that never was.....

In all apart from these 2 opportunities I have one or two other chances.
<BlogItemURL>
